Windows Vista Q&A:Can I connect a win Vista computer to the internet by just plugging in the cable?

Question by jb: Can I connect a win Vista computer to the internet by just plugging in the cable?
Getting a new computer for parents and wonder if it can connect just by plugging in the cable from modem – router without any additional software or configuration. I believe my own winXP did but was 2 yrs ago and not sure. This is not a wireless system btw..I know it was a mess with win 95 and 98 as I recall. The easier it is the better.

  1. Proto

If the router/modem has a regular network CAT5 cable (looks like a phone cord just bigger) then yes, just plug it into the new computer.

  2. r.factura

yes you can…just plug in the CAT5 cable to the ethernet port at the back of the cpu…then go to network connections, right click on that connection then click “enable”
